When choosing tubeless rim tape, you need to consider the internal width of the rim, which is typically measured in millimeters. The tape should be approximately 2–3 millimeters wider than the internal width of your rim.
This ensures that the tape fully seals the inside of the rim, including the transitions to the rim walls, without being too narrow or excessively bulging.
Example:
- Rim internal width: 25 mm
- Tubeless rim tape: 27–28 mm wide
Too narrow or too wide tape:
- Too narrow: May cause leaks as it won’t fully cover all the holes in the rim.
- Too wide: Can be difficult to install, as the tape may lift at the edges when mounting the tire.
